Mol and Sørum roll into the Round of 16 in Vienna after another dominating performance

Sørum and Mol are the team to be beaten in the Vienna Major

Men’s pool play concluded at the A1 Major Vienna presented by Swatch on Friday and Anders Mol and Christian Sørum were among the last teams to secure top finishes in their pools at the Danube Island with back-to-back victories.

The young Norwegians, who are now in the midst of a 15-match winning streak after they won both the Swatch Major Gstaad and the European Championships, claimed the first place in Pool C with a comfortable 21-11, 21-9 victory over Russians Konstantin Semenov and Ilya Leshukov.

“It was a very good game for us,” Sørum said in the end. “Anders found a great rhythm on his serving and his block was as good as usual too. We just kept scoring points and our side out was solid, so we just kept control of it. It’s good that we managed to win our pool and avoid an extra game.” 

The Beachvolley Vikings want to keep making the most of their great form and the best way to do that is by not thinking too much about it. If things are going their way, they say, all they want to do is to go out and play.

“We’ve won quite a few matches lately and that helps our confidence,” Sørum added. “We’re on a good form and we know what we have to do to perform well, so we just want to go out there and play and we’re having fun with it.”

The other three teams to come out on top of their pools were Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins, Brazil’s Alison Cerutti/Andre Loyola and Qatar’s Cherif Younousse/Ahmed Tijan.

They join Latvia’s Martins Plavins/Edgars Tocs, USA’s Jake Gibb/Taylor Crabb, Russia’s Nikita Liamin/Viacheslav Krasilnikov and the Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen, who won their pools on Thursday. These teams will all advance to the Round of 16 while the 16 other tandems that remain in contention will play first in the Round of 24, on Friday afternoon.
