Opening day’s entertainment pleases home beach fans
Austrian fans on Center Court had something to shout about on the first morning of the A1 Major Klagenfurt when home team Teufl/Zass stormed back to book a place in the second qualification round.
The duo put their fans through the whole spectrum of emotions as they lost the first set to American 10th seeds DiCello/VanZwieten, winners of an AVP event in New Orleans in April this year.
But the power of the home crowd on Center Court for the home teams will prove to be a big advantage this week, and so it proved for Teufl/Zass as they took a tense second set 21-19.
More drama was to follow as DiCello/VanZweiten led 9-7 and 12-11 in the third and final set only for the Austrians to wrestle back the advantage and seal an incredible victory.
However, there were no such smiles for Teufl and Zass’ fellow countrywomen as the two Austrian teams in the women’s qualification fell by the way side. Rimser/Almer lost to Switzerland’s Eiholzer/Gerson while Dörfler/Radl were beaten by Brazil’s Fernanda/Lima.
In the best of the rest in the first round of qualification all top five seeds made it through to round two, including German country quota victors Groβner/Bieneck who made light work of Danish duo Olsen/Bang, winning in straight sets in just 28 minutes.
