Wooooah! Excuse us while we take a breather for a minute! What a start we’ve had to the women’s Pool Play at the A1 Major Klagenfurt!

The biggest shock of the first round of matches is – without a shadow of a doubt – the defeat for smart Major Hamburg champions and number one seeds Ludwig/Walkenhorst, who suffered a shock defeat at the hands of young American wildcards Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes. What was even more remarkable was that 21-year-old Hughes and 20-year-old Claes got the job done in straight sets in just 36 minutes! Take a bow, girls!

The match might have taken place out on side court three but the news soon spread like wildfire and it was soon the talk of Center Court.

It wasn’t the only game of the women’s Pool Play to capture the imagination of the A1 Major Klagenfurt crowd as Austria’s Plesiutschnig/Schützenhöfer recorded a superb straight sets victory over Olympic-bound Swiss stars Zumkehr/Heidrich on Center Court.

It wasn’t all happiness for the hosts, however, as Schwaiger/Hansel suffered a set-back in their opening match in Pool H, losing to American qualifiers Day/Hochevar.

But it was business as usual for a number of Olympic-bound teams with Broder/Valjas of Canada, Germany’s Borger/Büthe, Argentina’s Gallay/Klug and Bawden/Clancy of Australia all getting off the mark in their opening matches of the Pool Play.

The men’s second round of qualification is up next before Wednesday ends with a second round of women’s main draw matches.
