They say the cream always rises to the top and at the A1 Major Klagenfurt the world’s best women are certainly proving that right!

At the start of the tournament 12 women’s teams with hopes of winning a unique Klagenfurt/Olympic double were vying for victory – and 10 now remain in the last 16.

And what a mouthwatering line-up we have in the second elimination round on the shores of the Wörthersee.

On Thursday the Swiss were certainly on a roll as Forrer/Vergé-Dépré and Hüberli/Betschart won their first elimination matches to progress to Friday’s nail-biting next phase.

We know there will definitely be a German team in the quarterfinals too. Four of the 16 teams left hail from just over the Austrian border and the draw has pitted hot favorites Ludwig/Walkenhorst against qualifiers Bieneck/Groβner.

It wasn’t such a good day for the American girls, though. All three remaining women’s teams in the competition were sent packing. That included wildcards Claes/Hughes, the young duo who had shocked the beach volleyball world by beating Ludwig/Walkenhorst yesterday.

The women’s tournament hots up even more on fantastic Friday as all the teams go in search of a place in the quarterfinals which will take place later in the day.

Among the hugely anticipated matches tomorrow are all-Olympic clashes between Bawden/Clancy of Australia and Forrer/Vergé-Dépré of Switzerland and Spain’s Liliana/Else and Poland’s Brzostek/Kolosinska.
