The dream of an Austrian medalist in the women’s A1 Major Vienna presented by Swatch tournament continues after Lena Plesiutschnig and Kathi Schützenhöfer fought back to earn a place in the last 16.
The home team came into their Round of 24 encounter against Andrea Strbova and Natalia Dubovcova of Slovakia with the eyes of a packed Red Bull Beach Arena on them.
And in the first set things did not look good for Kathi and Lena as the Slovaks bossed it, winning 21-16 to silence the huge crowd inside the main arena.
However, never bet against a home side in Vienna and with their backs against the wall, the Austrians rallied, sending the game to a decider, winning the second 21-16.
And with momentum with them, Plesiutschnig and Schützenhöfer surged clear in the tiebreaker to win 15-10 and book themselves a spot in Friday’s Last 16.
Facing the pair now are recently-crowned World Champions Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan of Canada in what promises to be a massive match on the Red Bull Beach Arena.
Congratulations, girls and see you on Friday!
