The men’s World Champions might have bitten the dust earlier in the day but the newly-crowned women’s champs are on a roll at the Danube Island as Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan stormed into the A1 Major Vienna presented by Swatch gold medal match.
After their stunning victory in Hamburg last month the Canadians remain on course to complete a Hamburg-Vienna double after storming to a semi-final victory over Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Duda Lisboa on the Red Bull Beach Arena.
Melissa and Sarah combined all of their skills to record a straight sets win, with the perfect block-defense game to stop a run of successive defeats against their Brazilian opponents.
“Everything came together well today, they are a tough team so we are delighted to win and thrilled to be in the final,” said Sarah.
“We’ve had a long time on the road traveling and we said that we wanted to win this tournament. We have never won a medal in Vienna so now we have – and we want it to be gold but it’s not going to be easy.”
The duo will face another Brazilian team in team in the final in their quest for gold, taking on Maria Antonelli and Carol Solberg after they beat Talita and Taiana in the previous semi-final.
“We just hope they are a bit tired!” joked Melissa – the Brazilians lost a second set 35-37 to their South American rivals. “We have played them a few times this season and we know how good they are.
“However, we’re just looking forward to another final. We can’t wait.”
The final takes place on the Red Bull Beach Arena at 6pm CEST.
