See you @ the beach!
Welcome to another edition of Beach Shorts! This will be a big weekend for beach volleyball in Europe as Germany and Russia, two of the continent’s strongest countries in the sport, will determine their 2020 national champions.
The week also featured a fantastic duel between Norwegians Anders Mol and Christian Sørum and Latvians Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins in the spectacular Nordic town of Lofoten and brought the lovely news of another incoming beach volleyball baby.
Scroll down and get all the details:
German title in play in Timmendorfer Strand
German beach volleyball’s elite is reunited in Timmendorfer Strand this week for the German Championships, the closing event of the country’s national season. The nation’s best 16 teams in each gender are competing for the crowns over the weekend and the duos of Julia Sude/Karla Borger and Julius Thole/Clemens Wickler, which won the tournament in 2019, will be looking for a repeat.
Russian Championship Finals in Sochi
Another European powerhouse that will have new national champions crowned this week is Russia as the country’s 24 top teams in each gender are battling in Sochi for the men’s and women’s titles. Reigning world champions Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Viacheslav Krasilnikov lead the pack among the men while reigning Youth Olympic champions Mariia Bocharova and Maria Voronina are the top-seeded among the women.
Samoilovs and Smedins down the Vikings in their home sand
Norwegians and Latvians weren’t involved in national tournaments this week, so Anders Mol/Christian Sørum and Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Janis Smedins headed to the Nordic town of Lofoten, where they played in an exhibition match that was streamed online. Playing an unbelievably fast-paced offense, the Latvians handed the Vikings a sound 21-13, 21-17 win on their home sand.
Social Media: A Finnish beach baby is on the way!
The beach volleyball family is just about to grow in a few months from now as Finnish player Taru Lahti and her husband and coach Kai Liukkonen have announced they’re expecting a baby. Lahti will miss the European Championships later this month but plans on returning to the sand on time to fight for qualification for next year’s Olympics. Congrats, guys!
See you next week!
